A respectful reorganisation of an existing dwelling to maximise its potential in the Kent Downs AONB.
Over time, the existing property has been extended and changed repeatedly, meaning the house is currently a jumble of disproportionate rooms. Externally the topography falls away towards the west, which creates a fantastic opportunity for the alterations to the property to connect with this dynamic landscape.
TaylorHare’s proposal is for both internal and external alterations to the two storey property to create a contemporary home. The reconfiguration of the existing layout allows for a more cohesive entrance sequence, whilst re-orientating the kitchen to a west/east axis has freed up the plan, allowing for maximum flexibility in terms of spacial quality/circulation and connections to the garden. At first floor, the existing property is to be slightly reorganised to provide well proportioned bedrooms with functional en-suites and dressing areas.
Glazing is used to allow a greater connection with the natural world outside, but is balanced with the domestic desire for enclosure, privacy and warmth. Familiar building elements and materials are carefully composed to create a sustainable house that is clearly of its time, but with an identity that is firmly rooted to its locale.
Planning permission was achieved in September 2019, and works are due to start on site in early 2020.
