An extraordinary Grade II* Listed residence, collection of barns and outbuildings set just outside the AONB at the foothills of the beautiful Kent Downs.
Our proposition aims to enhance and restore the forgotten character and architectural coherence of the principal house, as well as restore the surrounding cluster of barns, provide a new swimming pool with pool house and tennis court, all powered by a sustainable water source heat pump energy system harnessed from a new two acre lake.
A new addition to the north-east looks to improve on the unsympathetic piecemeal 20th century additions that detract from the intended character of the proposed internal spaces. A focus on honest, good quality materials such as hand made bricks and well-proportioned elevations, with careful articulation, lend the building a distinguished but domestic character: one that exemplifies a beautiful family home.
The main house and barns are conceived as marrying a series of discrete interventions with a sensitive approach to restoration, and an emphasis on re-instating a natural appearance to the interiors that allows for a gentle preservation of the initial appearance of the buildings in a distinguished landscape setting.
The careful restoration and management of the existing landscape to the south of the barns is key to re-instating the charm of what was once a wonderful farmyard. The creation of a new courtyard, that connects the long barn and main barn with a series of carefully placed new additions further south, intends to evoke and establish a character that is reminiscent of the qualities held in Claude Monet’s ‘Farmyard in Normandy’ painting.
Together with a wholesale restoration of the architecture, an extensive landscaping strategy has been created so as to inform and develop the external spaces both close to the existing house and proposed extension, as well as the wider grounds, barns and proposed outbuildings.
