Clausholm Slot is one of Denmark’s most remarkable historic estates. Set within 900 hectares of parkland, woodland and productive farmland, the estate has remained under the stewardship of the Berner family for over two centuries and is today cared for by sixth-generation custodians Christian Alexander Berner and Ditte Nordkild Berner. First and foremost, Clausholm remains a cherished family home.

Alongside its architectural and cultural significance, it has evolved into an important destination for public events, education and nationally recognised cultural programmes, including serving as the home of Danish Radio’s celebrated baking competition, Den Store Bagedyst. Together, these varied roles reflect an estate that continues to evolve while remaining true to the history, landscape and family stewardship that have defined it for generations.

The first phase reimagines the historic farmstead as the principal arrival sequence, transforming the threshold between private estate and public destination. Existing barns are sensitively adapted to accommodate new public uses, while carefully integrated visitor infrastructure, intuitive wayfinding and landscape interventions are woven throughout the eighteenth-century setting. Together, these proposals create an arrival experience that feels welcoming, accessible and sets the scene for the wider park experience.

More than a masterplan, the project establishes a framework for the estate’s long-term evolution. Future phases will support hospitality, education, cultural programming and recreation alongside the continued life of Clausholm as a working estate and cherished family home.

The ambition is not simply to preserve an extraordinary place, but to ensure it continues to evolve with purpose, resilience and care for generations to come.
