In response to the devastating California wildfires of January 2025, Crest Real Estate launched the Case Study 2.0 Program to help accelerate the rebuilding of Los Angeles communities. Bringing together 40 leading architects, the initiative created a collection of pre-designed, pre-approved homes that combine architectural quality with fire resilience, construction efficiency, and a streamlined path to rebuilding.
For TaylorHare, the project presented an opportunity to unite two design traditions that define our practice. Drawing on our experience transforming rural farmhouses in England alongside California’s enduring legacy of modern residential architecture, our design reinterprets the spirit of the original mid-century Case Study Houses for a new generation.
The home is organized as three gabled volumes connected by a central circulation spine. A generous vaulted living pavilion with exposed rafters forms the heart of the house, bringing together the kitchen, dining space, and sunken lounge while opening to the garden at both ends. Two taller volumes accommodate the living room, garage, and a ground-floor bedroom, with four additional bedrooms above, linked by a glazed bridge overlooking a sheltered internal courtyard.
‘Rooted in the optimism of California modernism, redefined through resilience, craftsmanship and contemporary family living.’
A defining principle of the design was balancing the openness of classic California indoor-outdoor living with contemporary fire-hardening strategies. Noncombustible materials, carefully considered hardscape, and resilient detailing provide protection from flames and embers while preserving the warmth, familiarity, and connection to landscape that characterize the California home.
With longstanding ties to Los Angeles and active projects in the Pacific Palisades, TaylorHare is committed to supporting the region’s recovery. To simplify what can often be a complex rebuilding process, we offer a coordinated design, engineering, and construction package through an experienced team of collaborators. In partnership with acclaimed interior designer Ryan Saghian, homeowners also have the option of a fully furnished, move-in-ready home upon completion.
